African leaders call for increased peacekeepers for Somalia

On Friday, African leaders gathered in Uganda to advocate for increased peacekeepers to protect Somalia from the extremist group al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaida and has been causing significant turmoil in the Horn of Africa. At the conclusion of a meeting in Kampala, regional leaders issued a statement indicating that additional troops might be sourced from Egypt. Over 10,000 African Union troops are stationed in Somalia, with almost half hailing from Uganda. The UN Security Council sanctioned the deployment of these AU troops, and various iterations of the peacekeeping mission have been active in the region since 2007. This event took place on 04/25/2025 at the following location: Kampala, Uganda.
