Dozens of masked men armed with machetes and clubs disrupted an anti-government protest in Malawi's capital, Lilongwe. The protest was organized to demand the resignation of the energy minister over fuel shortages and to object to plans for electronic voting in the upcoming general elections. The armed men prevented the protesters from assembling, and the police did not intervene. Tear gas was later used to disperse the protesters.
