China's Southern Theater Command conducted a new combat readiness exercise near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, deploying naval and air forces in what China calls "Huangyan Island." This disputed area, known as "Bajo de Masinloc" in the Philippines, has been a traditional fishing ground for Filipino fishermen and lies 125 nautical miles from Luzon, within Manila's exclusive economic zone.
