Cook Islands-China deal released as protests break out

The Cook Islands has signed a strategic partnership with China covering deep-sea mining, education, and economic cooperation, excluding security ties. The deal sparked protests and concerns both domestically and from New Zealand, which has constitutional ties with the Cook Islands. While China offers a $4m grant and opportunities in trade and infrastructure, opposition parties worry about risks to sovereignty and existing relationships. PM Mark Brown insists the partnership complements rather than replaces traditional alliances but faces a no-confidence vote. This event took place on 02/18/2025 at the following location: Avarua, Cook Islands.
