JNIM takes two Russian citizens hostage
An al Qaeda affiliate in West Africa's Sahel region, Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), has kidnapped two Russian citizens in Niger. The captives, who were working for a Russian company in southwest Niger, identified themselves as Yuri and Greg. They were taken hostage in Mbanga, an area west of the capital Niamey. Casualties rise in Mogadishu attack
At least 32 people were killed and many others injured in a suicide bombing and gun attack at a popular beachfront location in the Somali capital. The al-Shabab militant group, affiliated with al-Qaeda, is believed to be responsible for the attack. The attackers targeted a district controlled by the group. Thousands of people in Venezuela protested against President Nicolas Maduro's disputed reelection while his supporters held competing rallies. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado made a surprise appearance after being banned from running. The opposition claims the election results were fraudulent and that their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, won.
