Uganda

Uganda ordered to pay reparations to LRA victims
The Ugandan government has been instructed to pay reparations to victims of war crimes committed by former LRA commander Thomas Kwoyelo. Kwoyelo was sentenced to 40 years in prison for various crimes, and the court ordered payments of $2,700 for families of deceased victims and $1,350 for survivors of gender-based violence. As Kwoyelo is unable to compensate the victims, the government is responsible for covering the costs. The LRA, led by Joseph Kony, waged a 20-year insurgency against the Ugandan government and is accused of numerous massacres. Kony is still at large. This event took place on 12/18/2024.
