Tokyo has lodged a protest with Beijing after four Chinese vessels, believed to be armed, approached disputed islands in the East China Sea. This is the first time that four ships carrying cannons have entered Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku islands. The islets are also claimed by China, and the territorial dispute has strained relations between the two countries. The Chinese coast guard ships entered Japanese territorial waters and left after repeated warnings from the Japanese coast guard.
