An oil spill in Venezuela has caused damage to beaches and fishing on the northwestern coast. The spill near the El Palito refinery has affected Puerto Cabello, with tarry ooze seen on the sandy beaches. Satellite images show that the oil slick has caused 225sq km of damage. Fishermen in the area have been unable to work for eight days. The state oil company, PDVSA, has not commented on the situation.
