Pacific Islands Forum removed Taiwan from communique after Chinese complaints

The Pacific Islands Forum removed references to Taiwan from a communique after complaints from China's envoy. The bloc includes three members with ties to Taiwan and 15 members recognizing China. The original communique reaffirmed the 1992 decision on relations with Taiwan, but it was removed from the website and replaced with a new document without Taiwan references. China's special envoy called it a mistake and lobbied for Taiwan's exclusion. Taiwan's diplomatic allies in the Pacific have reduced as China offers more development funding. Nauru, Kiribati, and Solomon Islands switched ties from Taiwan to Beijing. This event took place on 08/31/2024 at the following location: Nuku'alofa, Togo.
