Papua rebels kill helicopter pilot, abduct four others

On Monday, regional police reported that Papua separatist rebels killed a New Zealand pilot and captured four passengers aboard the aircraft after it landed in an isolated area in the Alama district of Central province. The incident comes nearly 18 months after the abduction by rebels of another pilot from New Zealand, Phillip Mehrtens, who remains in captivity. The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) has denied receiving a report of the incident mentioned by police and, as a result, cannot immediately confirm the alleged killing of the pilot.
