Islamist-led rebel forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), captured the central Syrian city of Hama. They overran forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, just days after capturing Aleppo. The rebels claimed to have seized the city's prison and released inmates. Despite shelling and airstrikes by the Syrian and Russian air forces, the army admitted losing control of Hama, a strategically important city for protecting the capital, Damascus.
