Somalia and Egypt have agreed to cooperate in the fight against terrorism. The agreement came during final technical discussions on the African nations’ participation in a new African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia. The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) started its five-year tenure in early January. Somalia’s Defense Ministry stated that the Federal Government of Somalia recognizes the role Egypt can play in eliminating al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group, and looks forward to their contribution alongside other Troop Partner Nations.
